Sedation Options
Dental anxiety is common, yet many dental offices fail to offer ways to remove this stress. It’s one of the primary reasons we go beyond pillows, blankets and televisions to make our patients comfortable. We offer sedating medications, so your experience during exams and dental procedures are as comfortable as we can make them for you. The two primary sedation options we offer in our Concord, NC practice are Nitrous Oxide and Oral Conscious Sedation.
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
This common sedation drug has been used in dentistry for since 1844—long enough to prove it’s safe, with minimal side effects. The primary benefit of nitrous oxide is the calm and relaxation our patients experience almost immediately after they inhale the gas. When the procedure is over, we provide pure oxygen for a few minutes. This reverses the effects of the nitrous oxide.
Many of our patients appreciate the exchange of a mask over their noses for needles. And even when the pain-relieving effects aren’t adequate enough to eliminate the use of a needle completely most of our patients find they’ve relaxed enough to no suffer the anxiety needles usually create for them.
Oral Conscious Sedation
This is a popular choice among our patients with severe dental anxieties. We provide an oral sedation pill, which you take prior to coming in for your dental visit. This pill lets you remain fully awake during your dental treatment, while feeling calm and relaxed throughout your visit. However, there is one disadvantage of this option. You need to have someone drive you to and from your appointment. The pill makes many people sleepy. Sometimes our patients find it works best to combine the oral sedation pill with nitrous oxide, so we also provide this option.
